SPEECH, LANGUAGE, AND SWALLOW THERAPY

Jackson Park Hospital’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation provides evaluation and treatment of communication and swallow disorders.  The focus of the program is to maximize the patient’s communication and swallow abilities. Upon referral from a doctor, our experienced speech-language pathologist will perform a one-on-one evaluation to develop an individualized program of care tailored to each patient’s needs.  These needs are addressed through education, training, treatment and modifications of diet or communication strategies and often involve the patient’s family as integral members of the team.

For patients with swallowing difficulties we also offer swallow videofluoroscopy.  This is a test to diagnose the cause of the problems and to assist in the development of an appropriate treatment plan for the patient.

The treatment plan encompasses various techniques to improve speech, expressive and receptive language, oral motor and swallow functioning.  It also may establish alternative communication techniques and strengthen the patient’s cognitive abilities.  The objective of these activities is to regain, to the fullest extent possible, the patient’s ability to communicate effectively and/or to safely and effectively swallow the least restrictive diet.  We recognize and understand the importance of maximizing each patient’s ability to restore their speech, language, cognitive and swallow function in order to improve their health and well being.

Speech, language and swallow therapy is recommended for patients whose function has been impaired as a result of an injury or medical condition including:

• Stroke
• Brain Injury
• Dementia
• Neurological Disorders (e.g. Parkinsonism, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, etc.)
• Motor Vehicle Accident
