Price Transparency

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a final rule, effective January 1, 2021, that requires hospitals to post their standard charges in a machine readable format as well as a list of 300 shoppable charges, 70 of which are preselected by CMS.  These files are available through the links below.

Jackson Park Hospital is committed to price transparency and has posted these lists of charges for inpatient and outpatient services along with our discounted cash charge, de-identified minimum and maximum charge by health plan and charge by health plan. However, they are not likely a useful tool for helping a patient know what their financial obligation will be or to shop between hospitals. 

STANDARD CHARGES                SHOPPABLE CHARGES

The starting list of charges is the same for every patient.  But, the items ordered may vary by patient even though a similar procedure was performed.  This may be due to the patient’s medical condition, complications requiring unanticipated procedures, kinds of medication needed, etc.  Hospitals are not paid these charges by patients or health plans.

Commercial insurers negotiate discounts with hospitals on behalf of their enrollees and pay hospitals at varying discount levels, but much less than starting charges.  Medicare and Medicaid pay according to a regulated fee schedule – both pay at much less than what it cost the hospital to provide the service.

Patients with health coverage will only pay the deductible, coinsurance or copay required by their health plan.  Although we can assist with estimated charge information for the service being sought, the health plan is the best source of information pertaining to what an insured patient will pay.  For more information about the charge for your care and to obtain an estimate, please contact our patient financial services staff at 773-947-2310.

Patients without health coverage are protected by Illinois’ Hospital Uninsured Patient Discount Act.  It causes bills to eligible uninsured patients to be either completely written off or have significant discounts applied.  Jackson Park Hospital provides financial assistance counseling.
